The foundation for 4wardInnovation was laid in 2015, when Yaritza Ortiz was trained in invention and intellectual property education by the USPTO during the National Summer Teacher Institute (NSTI). This immersive experience not only equipped her with the knowledge to teach innovation but also ignited her passion for empowering students to think creatively and protect their ideas. Inspired by this training, Yaritza introduced her students to hands-on invention opportunities, ultimately leading them to participate in the Young Scientist and Ambassador Program (YSAP). The success her students experienced in YSAP helped crystallize her vision for a larger initiative dedicated to fostering creativity, innovation, intellectual property education, and the integration of emerging technologies to prepare students for the future workforce.
This vision was further strengthened when Yaritza was selected in 2022 to join the elite Master Teacher of Invention and Intellectual Property (MTIP) program. Through this prestigious program, she gained deeper insights into integrating invention and IP education into the classroom. Alongside collaborations with NASA HUNCH, BEST Robotics, and the STEM Innovator program, Yaritza began to see the potential for scaling her efforts to bridge education and workforce readiness. She recognized the critical role that emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced manufacturing—play in creating immediate opportunities for students to transition into high-demand, high-skilled careers.
In 2024, these experiences culminated in the creation of 4wardInnovation, a nonprofit organization with a mission to empower educators and students to thrive in a world of invention and technology. The organization focuses on:
- Sponsoring invention and patent-seeking inventors, offering support to bring their ideas to life.
- Providing professional development for educators, equipping them to teach innovation, intellectual property protection, and the application of emerging technologies.
- Expanding the Train-the-Trainer program, empowering teachers to integrate cutting-edge technologies and foster a culture of innovation.
A key part of 4wardInnovation's mission is to prepare educators and students to use, apply, and create emerging technologies to meet the demands of the modern workforce. By focusing on workforce-aligned innovation, the organization ensures that students are not only inventors but also ready to contribute to industries where creativity, critical thinking, and technical skills are essential. Through partnerships with NASA HUNCH, NT Semiconductors, and BEST Robotics, 4wardInnovation connects classrooms to real-world STEM applications, laying the foundation for students to engage in meaningful, workforce-ready experiences.
The Train-the-Trainer program is poised to become a national movement, ensuring that educators are equipped to teach innovation while also enabling students to create, adapt, and lead with emerging technologies. This alignment between education and workforce readiness makes 4wardInnovation a critical force in shaping the inventors and innovators of tomorrow.
At its heart, 4wardInnovation reflects Yaritza's journey: from her initial training with the USPTO in 2015, to the success of her students in YSAP, to her growth as an MTIP. The organization's mission is clear: to help educators and students imagine, build, and protect their ideas while preparing them to thrive in the modern workforce.
